Our commitment at Bahrain International Airport, operated by Bahrain Airport Company, is to connect people to the world while prioritizing environmental protection and sustainable development. we are committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050, and our overall business strategy firmly integrates effective sustainable targets to address the global climate crisis, build resilience, and secure a brighter future. This commitment to Net Zero emissions is in accordance with Bahrain's sustainability initiative and is in line with the Airport's Council International (ACI) environmental goals.

Our approach to sustainability is dynamic and multifaceted, tackling a range of climatic and environmental challenges. This includes comprehensive efforts to reduce our carbon footprint, manage waste responsibly, and improve our air quality.

Environmental Sustainability

Bahrain International Airport prioritizes environmental responsibility in the infrastructure and operations. The Passengers Terminal Building, Multi Story Car Park, and the Centralized Utility Center (CUC) are constructed using LEED-Certified materials and technologies, with energy-efficient systems in place, directly supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action (SDG 13), sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11) and responsible consumption and production (SDG 12).

LEED Gold Terminal

Bahrain International Airport is LEED Gold certified which facilitated the airport in achieving a 25% reduction in energy consumption compared to a conventional terminal that meets industry standards. This equates to an annual decrease of 12,565 tons in CO2 emissions. The decrease in carbon footprint has been achieved through the implementation of sustainable architectural design principles and the incorporation of energy-efficient systems throughout the terminal.

Net Zero Carbon

Bahrain Airport Company’s key priority is to achieve net zero carbon emissions by the year 2050. This commitment allows BAC to mitigate the impact of its operations on climate change, and transition towards a sustainable, low-carbon future. BAC has established a comprehensive carbon management framework to achieve this goal. 

Diverting Waste from Landfills

BAC has implemented various initiatives to divert waste from landfills by improving recycling processes and exploring feasibility of implementing waste-to-energy technology within a centralized waste management facility located in Bahrain International Airport’s remises. 

Economic Responsibility

Bahrain International Airport is designed to drive economic growth and development for the Kingdom. By constructing a state-of-the-art passenger terminal, And the new cargo village, All new projects aims to attract more airlines, tourists, and businesses to Bahrain. This increased capacity and activity is expected to create new job opportunities through the project’s lifecycle.

Bahrain International Airport is a key contributor to the overall aviation sector in Bahrain and a major driver of the country’s economy. All new projects are built upon the airport’s existing role as a regional hub, further strengthening its position and impact within the region. Furthermore, the airport infrastructure will strengthen Bahrain’s position as a regional aviation hub, potentially drawing in new airlines and fostering innovation in the aviation sector. Overall, Bahrain International Airport aligns with Bahrain’s national development goals, contributing to the growth of key sectors like tourism and trade, and supporting diversification of the economy.

Health & Safety

Bahrain International Airport prioritizes the safety and well-being of passengers, employees, and visitors. Safety measures include rigorous protocols and regular inspections to maintain a secure environment.

Health initiatives are offered to promote wellness, including health screenings, fitness activities, and mental health support. These programs aim to enhance overall well-being for both travelers and staff.

The airport has comprehensive safety protocols and emergency preparedness plans. These include clear evacuation procedures, accessible first aid stations, and coordination with local emergency services for swift incident response.

Training and awareness sessions are regularly conducted for internal and external stakeholders. These sessions ensure everyone is informed about safety procedures, emergency response, and best practices.

Continuous hazard mitigation and risk analysis are performed to identify and manage potential risks, ensuring a safe environment for all. This proactive approach helps minimize vulnerabilities and enhance airport safety.
