Advanced ICT infrastructure to enhance security and efficiency at new terminal

With its advanced technology and convenience-oriented approach, the new Passenger Terminal aims to put Bahrain International Airport (BIA) on the global aviation map alongside the world’s leading smart airports. Backed by robust and integrated Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure, the newly launched facility enhances BIA’s efficiency and security while meeting passengers’ growing expectations for a more seamless airport experience.

Advancements in automation streamline some of the most time-consuming processes and procedures, giving passengers more control over their journeys. One of the new technologies is a new self-bag drop system, which offers a range of benefits, including shorter passenger queues, reduced labor costs for airlines, and enhanced check-in capacities. Although the system is straightforward to use, staff are on hand to provide support at any time.

Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) Acting Vice President of ICT Mahmood Siddiqi said: “With its state-of-the-art ICT infrastructure, BIA is now one of the most advanced airports in the region. These new systems not only enhance operational efficiency and security, they also make the airport experience quicker and more comfortable for passengers. The advanced system is designed to deliver real-time connectivity that will enhance the travel experience of passengers and the efficiency of operations for the airport’s partners, while meeting demand for high volumes of data. This brings the Kingdom a step closer to achieving its digital transformation goals and provides airport partners with the latest communications solutions.”

The new terminal features 27 ICT systems working in an integrated manner, 1,125 km of fiber optic cables, 4,000 surveillance cameras, 440 screens to display flight information, 1,140 VoIP phones, 3,000 speakers for the internal radio system, 80 Internet Protocol televisions, 740 Wi-Fi access points, and 5,400 fiber optic cable links.

There are also two E-gate types at the new terminal. The system, which verifies users’ identities using biometrics, enables travelers to pass through immigration checkpoints faster and with less staff involvement while still maintaining a high level of security.

Operating the new terminal’s advanced equipment and IT systems requires extensive expertise, and Bahraini team members have been highly trained to work in these specialized disciplines. Having nationals in key operational roles demonstrates Bahrain’s advancements in aviation.
