Bahrain Airport Company hosts awareness lecture for employees on World Earth Day

Bahrain Airport Company (BAC), the operator and managing body of Bahrain International Airport (BIA), reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability as it celebrated this year’s Earth Day. To mark the occasion, BAC hosted a lecture for employees entitled, "Invest in Our Planet” to raise awareness about the importance of environmental protection and sustainable development. BAC Chief Development and Technical Officer, Abdulla Janahi led the session, which was facilitated by Environment Engineer, Dana Ismaeel.

The session highlighted key environmental issues that require the contribution of all employees and included a presentation on the new Passenger Terminal’s sustainable architecture and efficient systems, which reduce CO2 emissions by 12,565 tons annually. The session concluded with a demonstration on how employees can help to protect the environment at work and at home, including adopting green lifestyles.

Mr. Janahi said: “BAC is investing in Bahrain’s future by operating BIA as an environmentally friendly and efficient facility. We continuously work to minimize our carbon footprint and encourage employees to play a proactive role in the global battle against climate change wherever possible. Through the Airport Modernization Program, we have made significant improvements that reduce the airport’s environmental impact. For example, the new Passenger Terminal is Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certificated, making it the largest green buildings in the Kingdom.”

BIA continues working to become a carbon-neutral facility and is enrolled in the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation program. The program is the only institutionally-endorsed carbon management certification standard for airports and recognizes facilities that successfully manage and reduce their carbon footprint. BIA recently achieved Level 3 ‘Optimization’, bringing it closer to its goal.
